BNR reference rates

Currency 1 unit in RON Daily change

Source: National Bank of Romania (nbrfxrates.xml). Rates update on business days, around 13:00.

What these rates are

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) publishes an official set of reference exchange rates every business day, around 13:00 Romanian time. Each rate is quoted as the value of one unit of a foreign currency in Romanian lei (RON) — for example, how many lei one euro or one US dollar is worth. A few currencies (Hungarian forint, Japanese yen, and a handful of others) are quoted per 100 units; this tool applies that multiplier for you so every figure is per single unit.

How the converter works

Every conversion goes through the leu. To turn an amount from one currency into another, the tool first expresses it in RON using that day's reference rate, then converts the RON figure into the target currency. Because both steps use the same official day, RON is a neutral pivot and the result matches what you would get converting by hand from the published table.

Rates for a specific date

Use the date picker to see the reference rates for any past business day. Rates are not published on weekends and public holidays, so if you pick such a day the tool shows the most recent rate published on or before it — the same convention accountants use for invoices and contracts dated on a non-working day. The small trend line under the converter shows how the selected currency has moved over its last thirty published sessions.

Are these the rates I get at a bank?

No. The BNR reference rate is an official benchmark used for accounting, taxes, customs and contracts — it is not a rate at which anyone actually buys or sells currency. Banks and exchange houses add a spread and sometimes a commission, so their buy and sell prices sit either side of the reference rate. Treat the numbers here as the official mid-point, not a trading quote.

Frequently asked questions

How often are BNR exchange rates updated?

The National Bank of Romania publishes new reference rates every business day, usually around 13:00 Romanian time. There is no new rate on weekends or public holidays; the tool then shows the most recent published rate.

Is the BNR rate the same as the bank exchange rate?

No. The BNR reference rate is an official benchmark for accounting, taxes and contracts. Banks and exchange houses add a margin, so their buy and sell prices sit on either side of it.

Can I see the rate for a specific past date?

Yes. Pick a date and the tool loads that day's official rates. If the date is a weekend or holiday, it shows the last rate published on or before it.

Which currencies are included?

Every currency BNR quotes — around 35, including EUR, USD, GBP and CHF, plus regional and precious-metal references. Some (HUF, JPY and a few more) are quoted per 100 units; the tool normalises them to one unit.
