ARFCN, EARFCN, NR-ARFCN and GSCN
Radios do not tune in megahertz — they tune to a channel number. Each mobile technology has its own numbering. GSM uses the ARFCN (Absolute Radio-Frequency Channel Number) on a 200 kHz raster, UMTS uses the UARFCN, LTE uses the EARFCN on a 100 kHz raster, and 5G NR uses the NR-ARFCN on a global raster that changes step size across three frequency ranges. Enter a channel and this calculator returns the frequency, or enter a frequency and it returns the channel — for GSM and UMTS the channel drives the frequency, while LTE and NR convert both ways.
Bands, duplex and GSCN
An EARFCN maps to exactly one band, so LTE also shows the band and its duplex mode (FDD, TDD or supplemental-downlink). Because some bands overlap in frequency — 800 MHz B20 and 700 MHz B28 touch the same region, and the 2.6 GHz range spans B7, B38 and B41 — a frequency can belong to several bands, so the tool lists every candidate instead of guessing. For 5G NR the GSCN (Global Synchronization Channel Number) locates the SSB block a phone scans to find a cell; enter a GSCN, an NR-ARFCN or a frequency and the other two follow. The math follows 3GPP TS 36.101, TS 38.104, TS 25.101 and TS 45.005.
The Romanian band plan
The reference table lists which bands Orange, Vodafone and Digi operate in Romania across 2G, 4G and 5G, based on the ANCOM spectrum auctions and the 2025 market reshuffle. It is dated so you can see how current it is. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
What does the calculator convert?
Enter a channel number or a frequency and it gives you the other, plus the band and duplex mode, for all four radio technologies: GSM ARFCN, UMTS UARFCN, LTE EARFCN and 5G NR (NR-ARFCN with the SSB GSCN). The formulas follow 3GPP TS 36.101 and TS 38.104.
Why does one frequency show more than one band?
Some LTE bands overlap in frequency (for example 800 MHz B20 and 700 MHz B28 both cover part of the same range). When that happens the tool shows the primary band and lists the other candidates rather than guessing.
Does it know which bands Romanian operators use?
Yes. A reference table shows the bands Orange, Vodafone and Digi run in Romania across 2G, 4G and 5G, based on the ANCOM spectrum auctions and the 2025 market changes, and it is dated so you know how current it is.
