Text Encoding Fixer (Mojibake Repair)

🔒 Runs in your browser

What is mojibake?

Mojibake (from the Japanese for character transformation) is the scrambled text you get when bytes saved in one character encoding are read back with a different one. The most common case on the web: text stored as UTF-8 is read as Windows-1252 (or Latin-1). Every multi-byte UTF-8 character then splits into two or three wrong single-byte characters — so Piața turns into PiaÈ›a, é becomes é, and the curly apostrophe ’ shows up as ’.

How this tool repairs it

Repair reverses the mistake exactly. Each garbled character is mapped back to the single Windows-1252 byte it must have come from, those bytes are gathered, and the byte stream is decoded as UTF-8 again — recovering the original letters. The tool first checks for tell-tale mojibake signatures (a lead character such as Ã, Â, È or â followed by a continuation character) and only rewrites the text when doing so removes them without introducing replacement characters, so it can also unwind double-encoded text run through the mistake twice.

Why Romanian diacritics break so often

Romanian ș, ț, ă, î and â are all outside plain ASCII, so they are exactly the characters that corrupt when an app, CSV export, database column or email gateway assumes Windows-1252 instead of UTF-8. This is why lists of names, addresses and product descriptions so frequently arrive full of È›, ă and à sequences. Paste the affected text above and the correct diacritics come back. Everything runs in your browser — the text never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

What is mojibake?

Mojibake is scrambled text you get when bytes saved in one encoding are read with another — most often UTF-8 text read as Windows-1252, so ț turns into È› and é into é.

Why do Romanian diacritics break so often?

The letters ș, ț, ă, î and â are non-ASCII, so they are the first to corrupt when an app, CSV export or database assumes Windows-1252 instead of UTF-8. Repair restores the correct letters.

Will it damage clean text?

No. It only rewrites text carrying mojibake signatures, and only when the change removes them without adding replacement characters. Clean text and normal accents like café stay untouched.

Does my text get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser and the text never leaves your device.
