How diacritic removal works
Every accented letter can be split into a plain base letter plus an invisible combining mark — a process called Unicode NFD (Normalization Form D) decomposition. For example é decomposes into e followed by a combining acute accent. This tool decomposes your text, deletes every combining mark, and puts the plain letters back together — so é→e, ñ→n, ü→u, and so on.
Both Romanian diacritic forms are handled
Romanian ș/ț (comma-below) and the older, incorrect ş/ţ (cedilla) look almost identical but are different Unicode characters — both decompose to the same base letter, so either form converts cleanly to s/t. Common uses: generating safe filenames and URL slugs, sending SMS through gateways that only support ASCII, and feeding legacy systems or databases that mishandle accented characters. Punctuation, digits, spacing and emoji are left untouched.
Frequently asked questions
What characters are affected?
Only letters carrying diacritical marks — they are reduced to their base letter (é→e, ñ→n, ș→s). Digits, punctuation, spaces and emoji pass through unchanged.
Why remove diacritics?
Legacy systems, filenames, URLs, SMS gateways and some databases handle plain ASCII more reliably; stripped text also helps with search matching.
