How the trip cost is calculated
Enter the trip distance, your car's fuel consumption and the pump price, and the calculator works out how much fuel the journey burns and what it costs. Internally everything is converted to metric — litres per kilometre and price per litre — so litres = distance × consumption and cost = litres × price. Turn on round trip to double the distance for there-and-back journeys, and set the number of people to split the bill for a carpool. Every figure is computed instantly in your browser as you type; nothing is uploaded.
L/100 km, km/L and mpg
Consumption can be quoted several ways. L/100 km (litres per 100 kilometres) is the European standard — lower is better. km/L is kilometres per litre — higher is better. mpg is miles per gallon, and the US and UK gallons differ (1 US gallon = 3.785 L, 1 UK gallon = 4.546 L), so a "40 mpg" US figure is not the same as 40 mpg UK. Pick the unit that matches your dashboard; when you choose an mpg unit the distance field switches to miles, and you can price fuel per litre or per gallon independently.
What the estimate leaves out
This is a fuel-only estimate. It does not include motorway tolls or vignettes, parking, congestion charges, ferries, or the running cost of the car itself (tyres, servicing, depreciation). Real-world consumption also drifts from the official figure with driving style, speed, load, air conditioning, cold weather and traffic — so treat the result as a close ballpark, not an exact receipt.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between L/100 km and mpg?
L/100 km is litres burned per 100 kilometres — lower is better. mpg is miles per US or UK gallon — higher is better; the two gallons differ (US 3.785 L, UK 4.546 L). Pick the unit shown on your dashboard and the distance field adapts.
Does it include tolls and parking?
No. This is a fuel-only estimate. Motorway tolls, vignettes, parking, ferries and the car running costs (tyres, servicing, depreciation) are not included.
How accurate is the result?
The maths is exact, but real fuel use drifts from the official consumption figure with driving style, speed, load, air conditioning, cold and traffic — treat it as a close ballpark, not an exact receipt.
Can I split the cost between passengers?
Yes. Set the number of people and the calculator divides the total fuel cost equally — handy for carpools and shared road trips. Turn on round trip to double the distance.
