How the counts work
Words and sentences are found with the Unicode text-segmentation algorithm
(Intl.Segmenter) — the same boundary logic browsers use internally — rather than a
naive split on spaces or periods. That means accented letters and diacritics never split a word
in two, and a decimal number or an abbreviation does not get miscounted as a sentence break.
Paragraphs are counted separately: any block of text separated from the next by at least one
blank line counts as its own paragraph, while a single block with no blank line counts as one.
Reading time and privacy
Reading time is estimated from the average adult reading speed of 200 words per minute, rounded up to the nearest minute — the same rule of thumb used by most word processors and blogging platforms. Every count updates instantly as you type or paste, and the text never leaves your browser: nothing is uploaded or stored anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Word boundaries are found with the Unicode text-segmentation algorithm (Intl.Segmenter), the same logic browsers use — accented letters and diacritics never split a word in two.
