Word segmentation, not a regex split
Splitting text on spaces breaks on em dashes, hyphenated compounds and punctuation glued to a word
(dog. and dog would count as different tokens). This tool uses the
Unicode word-segmentation algorithm built into the browser (Intl.Segmenter) to find
word boundaries the way a reader would, then strips leading and trailing punctuation while keeping
internal marks like the apostrophe in don't. Matching is case-insensitive by default —
Cat and cat count together — but you can switch to case-sensitive counting
if casing matters for your text.
Cleaning up the results
A minimum-length filter drops short tokens like single letters, and the bundled English or Romanian stop-word list removes common function words (the, and, of — și, de, la) so the table surfaces the words that actually carry meaning. The frequency table, running totals and CSV export all update as you type, entirely in your browser — nothing you paste here is uploaded anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How are words split from the text?
The tool uses the Unicode word-segmentation algorithm built into the browser (Intl.Segmenter), which finds word boundaries the way a reader would and strips leading/trailing punctuation while keeping marks like the apostrophe in "don’t".
Does it count "Cat" and "cat" as the same word?
Yes, by default matching is case-insensitive. You can switch to case-sensitive counting if casing matters for your text.
What do the stop-word and minimum-length filters do?
The minimum-length filter drops short tokens like single letters; the bundled English or Romanian stop-word list removes common function words (the, and, of / si, de, la) so the table highlights the words that carry meaning.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No — counting happens entirely in your browser as you type. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.
